Play

verse:

Conversation going nowhere fast,

Exposition stretching on too long (I fear),

Conversation gone from bad to worse,

Interest is waning,

We'll just...

chorus:

Play,

It doesn't matter what you say,

It doesn't matter if you're out somewhere,

It doesn't matter if you're out somewhere.

verse:

Taking notes, I am listening,

I am seated but the mouth is moving (again),

Pushing pens prevents an ugly scene,

Provides distraction from a cruel, cruel world.

There's a party going on at the hospital,

All the patients are up, I can hear through the wall,

Maybe we should join, maybe we should join them,

Maybe we should join, maybe we should learn to...

chorus:

Play,

It doesn't matter what you say,

It doesn't matter if you're out somewhere,

It doesn't matter if you're out somewhere.

Play,

It doesn't matter if you stay,

It doesn't matter if you're out somewhere,

It doesn't matter if you're out somewhere.

Most of the music for "Play" was written by Alex and Austin during a jam session.  The verse, chorus, and the melody were written within a matter of minutes.  Later, Daniel would come up with a rocking bass riff to lead into the breakdown.  The bridge went through many different versions (two of which were performed at live shows) before the band finally stumbled upon the loud-soft-loud jam that now exists.  Notice Derek's eclectic guitar lead over the mellow bass and guitar run.  Derek's subtle playing provides a definite contrast from the rest of the song.

"Play" was first recorded at Woodland Studios in 2004.  Alex sings lead vocals with Daniel and Austin providing multiple harmonies.
